Constraint summation in phonological theory

چکیده

The classical constraints used in phonological theory apply to a single candidate at time. Yet, some proposals the literature have enriched constraint toolkit with that instead multiple candidates simultaneously. For instance, Dispersion Theory (Flemming 2002, 2004, 2008) adopts distinctiveness penalize pairs of surface forms which are not sufficiently dispersed. Also, approaches paradigm uniformity effects (Kenstowicz 1997; McCarthy 2005) adopt Optimal Paradigm faithfulness stems similar. As consequence, these need “lift” from by summing violations across candidates. Is this assumption summation typologically innocuous? Or do make different typological predictions when they summed, independently presence or optimal constraints? answer depends on underlying model optimization, namely how profiles ordered determine smallest one. Extending an independent result Prince (2015), paper characterizes those orderings for is innocuous. corollary, innocuousness established within both Optimality and Harmonic Grammar.

Features in Phonological Theory

Features are central in phonological theory. They come in different varieties. Using the methods of [263] we shall analyse a few conditions on phonological structures. This will elucidate the tradeoff between features on the one hand (and structure) and principles on the other. Without making any claims as to which method is superior, we shall simply outline what choices one has in describing t...

The relativistic two-body potentials of constraint theory from summation of Feynman diagrams

The relativistic two-body potentials of constraint theory for systems composed of two spin-0 or two spin2 particles are calculated, in perturbation theory, by means of the Lippmann−Schwinger type equation that relates them to the scattering amplitude. The cases of scalar and vector interactions with massless photons are considered. The twophoton exchange contributions, calculated with covariant...

Optimality theory in phonological acquisition.

This tutorial presents an introduction to the contemporary linguistic framework known as optimality theory (OT). The basic assumptions of this constraint-based theory as a general model of grammar are first outlined, with formal notation being defined and illustrated. Concepts unique to the theory, including "emergence of the unmarked," are also described. OT is then examined more specifically ...

Phonological Derivation in Optimality Theory

Optimality Theory is a constraint-based theory of phonology which allows constraints to conflict and to be violated. Consequently, implementing the theory presents problems for declarative constraint-based processing frameworks. On the basis of two regularity assumptions, that sets are regular and that constraints can be modelled by transducers, this paper presents and proves correct algorithms...

A word-order constraint on phonological activation.

Word-order rules impose major constraints on linguistic behavior. For example, adjectives appear before nouns in English, and after nouns in French. This means that constraints on word order must be language-specific properties upheld on-line by the language system. Despite the importance of these rules, little is known about how they operate. We report an influence of word order on the activat...
